Panga Cliffs

The cliffs of Panga are famous sights of the island. It is the highest and longest cliff of the western islands of Estonia. Above the cliffs there is a beautiful hiking trail, always along the cliffs.

Moreover, the cliffs stand on slates, right down by the water. On these slate stones, fossilized plants can be found with good luck.

Sõrve Peninsula & Sõrve Lighthouse

The next morning we drive over the southern peninsula of Sõrve. We drive past pine forests on the well-maintained road 77 and at the end of the peninsula we are greeted by the Sääre lighthouse. If the weather had been better, we would have climbed the 250 steps to the top of the lighthouse. But so we limit ourselves only to a walk to the southernmost tip of Saaremaa.

A baby seal is sleeping on the beach, and a whole colony of cormorants is sitting on a small island off the coast – pure Baltic Sea feeling. By the way: The Baltic Sea is called the West Sea in Estonia. Makes sense from this perspective.

Kaali Meteorite Crater

After a delicious Kama drink – that is yogurt with a powder of rye, oat, pea and barley flour – in the museum café, we arrive at the Kaali meteorite crater field. There are nine craters to see, the deepest one measures 22 meters.

Unfortunately, we realize that time is running out and we have to go to the ferry. Therefore we save the visit of the meteorite impacts for our next visit.

Kiipsaare tuletorn

Harilaiu Peninsula is the most beautiful and ancient part of Vilsandi National Park. It has been a protected area for fauna, flora, and geological study since 1924. The Harilaiu hiking trail starts from the car park of the Harilaiu recreation site of the State Forest Management Centre. The longer 10 km marked trail passes over the Harilaiu isthmus and runs to the Kiipsaare lighthouse in the northwest.

After that, it follows the dunes on the beach to Kelba point and then back to the beginning of the trail. The 6 km trail splits from the longer trail in the middle of the peninsula and runs towards Haabade Bay where it joins the longer trail again in the south. If you want, you can take a break and put up a tent by Laialepa Bay. It would be sensible to visit the Vilsandi information point in Loona first.

So we continue into the interior of the island, to the mill hill of Angla. In this museum there are several of the windmills that can still be seen in many places on the island

but most of them have fallen into disrepair or no longer have wings. Bock windmills stand on a base and can be turned in the direction of the wind.

Burg Kuressaare

Kuressaare Castle & Saaremaa Museum

Kuressaare Bishop‘s Castle, popularly known as „Kuressaare Castle“ or „Arensburg Castle“, was built in the 14th century. Today the castle houses the Museum of Saaremaa. The permanent exhibition about the history of Saaremaa can be seen in the cloister of the upper floor and in the two large halls. The permanent exhibition on contemporary history consists of two parts.

The exhibition „Saaremaa 1939-49“, completed in 2005, is located in three halls of the northeast wing of the castle. The exhibition „Saaremaa 1950-94“, completed in 2011, is located on four floors of the fortified tower. In the nature section of the Museum of Saaremaa you will get an idea about the subsoil, climate and coast, as well as the animals and birds of Saaremaa.
