Kuressaare Bishop‘s Castle, popularly known as „Kuressaare Castle“ or „Arensburg Castle“, was built in the 14th century. Today the castle houses the Museum of Saaremaa. The permanent exhibition about the history of Saaremaa can be seen in the cloister of the upper floor and in the two large halls. The permanent exhibition on contemporary history consists of two parts.
The exhibition „Saaremaa 1939-49“, completed in 2005, is located in three halls of the northeast wing of the castle. The exhibition „Saaremaa 1950-94“, completed in 2011, is located on four floors of the fortified tower. In the nature section of the Museum of Saaremaa you will get an idea about the subsoil, climate and coast, as well as the animals and birds of Saaremaa.
